York students have voted ‘ yes ‘ by a large majority, connecting to the National Union of students (NUS). Referendum was titled, “York must stay connected with the NUS?”, 751 votes for aid to 263 against and 65 abstentions. The last referendum, three years ago, also saw the ‘ yes ‘ camp convincing victory.

Peter Spence, a second year student economy led the debate against the remaining with the NUS. He argued that the “bad reputation reflects badly on the University” and that the cost of the membership of NUS can be directed to “more tangible benefits”. YUSU President, Tim Ngwena, commented earlier on that sabbatical officers of YUSU were divided about their decisions but the same Ngwena in support of the referendum in their personal capacity as appeared. Stay with the NUS he argued many financial advantages has pointed to a recent donation of £ 8,500 to a unit of recycling and 600 pounds to the preparations for the national demonstration last year against increases in the rate. All sabbatical officers also gave public support, but not in its role as official.

Spence comment after the defeat: “was the result not very tempting to think that given the short time that we had to assemble a campaign (you knew that the date of the referendum four days before the vote opened) was very hard to leave the message to the students.” “An alarming of the majority of students who speak we had no idea that a referendum took place, or even had idea what the NUS was.”

He added: “I hope that a change within the Organization and some of the many shortcomings for a position of delegate of the NUS if possible try to achieve”.

A recent referendum on the University of Durham returned 60% ‘ yes ‘ vote re-affiliate, after a shaky experience of the NUS, while the notable universities such as the University of St Andrews and the University of Southampton is currently not affiliated to the NUS.

The other seven Union were adopted resolutions of the general meeting (UGM), four and three were defeated. There Was a high turnout and all the proposals the required levels of quoracy had achieved.

Including particularly important points movement 6: a position clear on the invited speakers, defeated by only one vote. After Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam Kawthari to speech “misconceptions about Islam” was the last period of the motion, proposed by LGBT officer Emma Brownbill, concerned with the welfare of the students must take precedence over freedom of expression.

Traffic (4) concerning the submission of ‘ Boys ‘ in your magazines: shop, proposed by the Commission on women and seconded by Emma Brownbill, argued that the recorded ‘ boys ‘ magazines on behalf of the well-being of all students of York should be. Your: Shop decided to hide ‘ Boys magazines ‘ after the renovation in 2008 after a UGM presented by the women’s Committee in 2007 but political YUSU on boys ‘ magazines ‘ expired. This time, however, the draft resolution was defeated, with 412 496 votes cast. Academic Affairs Officer Ben Humphrys was one of them speak against the resolution in the General Assembly of the Union.
