Arcade Fire

TORONTO-Arcade Fire has a reputation of seriousness, held for a long time, if carefully considered the music of the band of Montreal, his politics or his independent spirit firmly.

For what is perhaps not surprising that the raw images of the new band directed by Spike Jonze short film “scenes from the suburbs”-in which characters gloomy a civilian army on a point can be run on a pristine suburban Street, they are interpreted as a statement in the suburbs of itself, the army or the border of the safety of the United States.

But, really, the band will that Butler says that they only had fun making a short film influenced by the films of science fiction adventure who grew up watching.

“No, I think it starts with the genre, such as: ‘ we’re going to a dystopian film, ‘” corrected Butler.

“Was not the case:” the world is going to hell, and this is the hell we will be in 25 years. In addition, we are going to get a science fiction film. “Oh, what a plausible path that can do this?”

“But we really want some guys with firearms in the future.”

In fact, scenes from the films “suburbs”, which is the projection on the CFC worldwide short film Festival this week in Toronto and will, then the part of a Deluxe version of an album of Montreal “the suburbs” on 2 August – the nostalgia of classic gestures is a puzzle game of science fiction, that resembles a mix of Terry Gilliam paranoia with Steven Spielberg.

The almost 30 minutes film filled with some of the gaps in the version of the video clip for “the suburbs,” in which a group of adolescents without direction, lose their time in a pristine American suburb despite the presence of premonition of armed soldiers, des plumes of black smoke and helicopters buzzing overhead.

In the extensive film gets the audience knows the protagonists: boring, harmless children and learn more about the situation of impasse between two residents of neighborhoods that soldiers dragging people from their homes and sacrifice inspires a resident on the street while the protagonists of their cycling near Mount.

Bleak things. But the film, which was written by Jonze, Butler and his brother, Win, includes also resourceful, quick dialogue muttered by teen leads: non-professional actors who many of the lines in the process impromptu.

In other words, the film is sometimes very funny, an adjective rarely applied to the projects of the Grammy award winning band.

Butler “only because it is not our most important music, and don’t have too many comic songs,” said the irony.

Some reports have indicated that the brutal soldiers in the film are known as agents of the Department of Homeland Security, United States, it rejects the idea of a Butler, saying they were only “grim military guys”.

And it says that the future value of the film was not meant as a kind of cooling of the vision of what’s to come.
