hanna

Last week saw a good story about a local couple of big kids – the beauty of 11 years old, Sriram Hathwar score in the National Spelling Bee Competition for the recognition of the harvest this year or Mark Twain scholars.

That is fine.

I have the hope of a few of the older students want to continue adding to his list of successes and some money too.

Axis in the years to adapt to the Star-Bulletin has two area high school seniors-to-be or new graduates to participate in the annual E. Frank Tripp High School Internship Program this summer.

The internship offers students the opportunity to interact with reporters and editors in the newsroom. Interns receive hands-on experience in journalism and paid for their work thanks to a generous donation of $ 2.000 Tripp Foundation. (The amount is divided between two students.)

The program, which began in 2002, is the name of the late Frank E. Tripp, who as director of the Star-Gazette served for 42 years and succeeded his partner, Frank Gannett, as head of Gannett Co.. Inc

Interns shadow reporters and photographers from breaking news events such as fires, car accidents and damage caused by heavy storms. Get some of the most mundane things, too, as the rewriting of press releases relating to the scheduled hearings and public meetings to see. But getting to try his hand at reporting, writing and photography.

This summer I have a special project in mind for successful candidates In addition to the festivals and events coverage. The project, a commitment that I hope to become a series, search for “hidden treasures” of the history of civil war local historical societies and museums, and then write theses stories behind the objects.

Would be collected, if available, is not a sit-on training, office. past trainees were on the road almost every day and traipsed around the area. To this end, candidates should also possess a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance. Access to a car is necessary.

Interested candidates should a cover letter, resume (including references) and at least two writing samples (school work is acceptable.) Email everything to me: lowilson@gannett.com.

Potential trainees will be interviewed by the editors, including myself, who will ask questions about themselves, their thoughts on journalism today, the community and future goals.
