A federal grand jury accused twice candidate to the Presidency John Edwards on Friday more than $ 925,000 brought her lover and her baby into hiding during the peak of his 2008 campaign for the White House.

The case of the United States v. Johnny Reid Edwards contains six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and a number of false statements.

The indictment says that the payments were a scheme for the protection of the ambitions of the White House of Edwards. “A centerpiece of the candidacy of Edwards was his image as a devoted family man,” said the indictment.

“Edwards knew that the disclosure of the affair and pregnancy his candidacy by, among other things, would destroy undermine the presentation of Edwards of himself as a family man and for his campaign to force distract staff and resources of other activities to respond to the criticisms and the control of the media on the topic and the pregnancy of the campaign” says the indictment.

The indictment and the arrest warrant was presented in Greensboro (North Carolina), which is in the district where he was campaign.

Negotiations between lawyers for Edwards and federal prosecutors to settle a charge that he was prepared to plead guilty Edwards remained until Thursday, but were unsuccessful, according to people with knowledge of the negotiations. Prosecutors in a plea for a crime, had insisted that its capacity to keep track of their license to practice law.
