Octet Rule

1-20 Items should theoretically to build molecular using only the spherical-shaped compound dumbell structure: the s-and p-orbitals. Theoretically speaking, may not exceed eight valence electrons never surround these atoms. This is the octet rule and also explain what not more than four atoms surround every time those elements. The octet rule is supposed to be phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine. And yet …

Fact: PF5 and SF6, in clear violation of the octet rule. PF5 has ten valence electrons (2 in each band) and twelve SF6. Besides, violating some common species such as perchlorate phosphate and sulfate, the octet rule. They are very serious allegations. Good people can even have died in the issue. Link

Look, are smart people disagree on many things. As a side the old name of sulphuric acid, vitriol, which nowadays usually means unpleasant rhetoric. But the origin of the word. According to the OED is vitriol, H2SO4, named after the Crystal appearance of concentrated sulfuric acid. I love how so many words, in the end, only metaphors. Vitriol is an old powder and came to us by Alchemy. By the way, we have “sulphuric acid” and the British spelling “sulphuric acid” is explained.
